The "Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion" DLC for "Battleborn" contained several Easter eggs linking to "Borderlands 3." Part of the side objectives for the DLC includes portals that appear for a few seconds, revealing several signals before disappearing. Dedicated players were able to decode the signals, noting that a message was hidden regarding keywords for the "Borderlands" games.
According to PlayStation Lifestyle, the decoded message reads: "Visit Promethea. Children of the Vault. We are not on Pandora Anymore. Tannis Is Not What She Seems. Do Not Open The Vaults." Fans of the "Borderlands" franchise take the message as a warning from the Eridians about Patricia Tannis, a major character in the series. Also, if taken properly, this could also indicate that "Borderlands 3" will take place on a different planet altogether.
Gearbox, developer of "Borderlands 3," has been quite stingy in terms of revealing content from the upcoming game.No official videos or screenshots have been shared to the public until the 2017 Game Developers Conference. As Digital Trends reported, a tech demo for "Borderlands 3" was presented by company CEO Randy Pitchford, wherein Gearbox showcased the "Borderlands" art style rendered by the Unreal Engine 4.
Announced during the Penny Arcade Expo of 2015, the developers initially did not have any plans to create a "Borderlands 3" title, with Pitchford stating in 2014 that a sequel to "Borderlands 2" would need to be massive. Gearbox went along with it, in the long run, committing to bringing the "big one" and even hiring additional staff to boot. At one point, the developers hinted that the third installment may not even be called "Borderlands 3," hinting that they could change the title later on.
Currently, "Borderlands 3" is being made for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. As for the Nintendo Switch, Pitchford has clarified that talks for a release on the Switch stopped at some point, claiming that Nintendo has other priorities in mind.
