Though the New York Yankees were the playoffs wildcard team this year in the 2015 MLB season, that didn't stop new manager Joe Girardi and former roster players Tino Martinez and Lee Mazzilli from focusing their attention on giving back to the community for a good cause! Partnering with the Starkey Hearing Foundation, these MLB stars (along with representatives from the Minnesota Vikings, the NBA's Ron Harper, TV's Daymond John, and Orange is the New Black actress Dascha Polanco) hosted a tremendous event ay Yankees Stadium, gifting more than 80 New Yorkers with the gift of hearing! These recipients ranged from the age of four to ninety four, some of whom were Holocaust survivors and others that have never had hearing before!

"The Yankee's really believe in giving back to the community and giving every child an opportunity to be successful in life and with what the Starkey foundation does for hearing is so important to learning," Girardi said. "It's important for the kids to see that we support them as well and we want them to have successful lives and go out and do the things that they really want to do."
"It has been amazing. It's so validating and it makes you realize how important it is that humans help one another," Dascha Polanco said this week. "You have basketball players, you have a Latina from Orange Is the New Black, you have baseball players, you have the Jewish Federation and you can see how diverse the world is and regardless of the diversity we become a team. Success is at your door. It's reachable...Hopefully it's contagious and other organizations get the help they need as well and everyone helps one another because I think that's what's missing nowadays."
Over the years, the Starkey Hearing Foundation has organized events like this, changing loves of those with hearing impairment and beyond. This week's event is another example of the organization and its partners furthering the cause and raising awareness for the hearing impaired.
"Our job is to start a wave of good," William F. Austin, founder of the Starkey Hearing Foundation told Medical Daily during the event. "We're hoping that we can reach a critical mass that creates enough to reflect a light that will start to drive back the darkness in the world, so people will feel hope. Hearing connects us as one human family."
