Several members of the Seinfeld cast came together (sort of) to give a terminally ill fan the birthday wish of his life—a video recording of some in, and out of, character Happy Birthday messages.
Earlier this month, James Calder reached out to several members of the cast asking them to make videos for his father, Jim, who was dying of lung cancer. Jim was an obvious fan of the series, and soon received videos from the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Elaine Benes), John O'Hurley (J. Peterman), Wayne Knight (Newman), Patrick Warburton (David Puddy) and many more.
Most of the cast sent in videos as their famed character, specifically O'Hurley, Knight and Warburton. Louis-Dreyfus sent in a video as herself but had some rather heartfelt things to say: 1) she was thrilled Jim was a fan of Seinfeld, 2) his son is pretty wonderful, and 3) Happy Birthday.
As Calder's blog on The Huffington Post notes, his father has since died from cancer, but the videos sent to him before his death show an undoubted appreciation for his love for the show. Furthermore, they show how much a simple act of kindness can go.
"I want to share an amazing story about human kindness," his post reads, further detailing the path he took to give his father the best birthday wish he could imagine. And while his post shows more videos from different cast members than what we have posted above, a real shock came when Michael Richards, who famously played Cozmo Kramer, reached out to Calder and said that he wanted to give his father a call to wish him a Happy Birthday.
Richards reportedly preferred the phone call because he didn't care to get any media attention that could possibly come from a video.
Jerry Stiller, who played George Costanza's father, Frank, also made a video but asked Calder to keep it private between he and his family. Naturally Calder respected his wishes.
