Kansas City Chiefs Beat Houston Texans 30-0, Win First Playoff Game Since 1994
It's been a good few months for Kansas City. First, the Royals won the World Series for the first time in 30-plus years. Now, the the Kansas City Chiefs have done something comparable – winning their first NFL playoff game since well before the turn of the century.
The 11-5 Chiefs traveled south to face the 9-7 Houston Texans in the AFC wild-card playoff. On the opening kick off, Knile Davis, a Houston area native, returned the ball 106 yards for a Chiefs touchdown.
"It was good to set the tempo in my hometwon," Davis said, via Newsday. "When I saw the ball in the air, I saw the coverage. I knew they weren't on me yet. I was like, this is a good opportunity to do something. And when I left, I saw it split like the Red Sea and I took it to the house."
It was the perfect start to the game, and something the rest of the team fed off. The defense was stifling – forcing Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer to have less than spectacular day at the office – and the offense managed the game well.
"We wanted to come in and dominate," Chiefs safety Eric Berry said, via ESPN. "Right now we are locked in and ready for next week."
And dominate they did. They went on to beat the Texans by the final score of 30-0. In fact, it was all rather anticlimactic; unless you're a Chiefs fan, that is. Then it was the best thing you've seen since 1994--the last time they tasted victory in the playoffs. Which coincidentally took place in the same city when the Oilers called Houston home.
"Was it 1994?" asked Chiefs coach Andy Reid postgame, via ESPN. "I didn't feel it, but I know how important it is, too. You get to the playoffs, and first round, if things don't go well, that rips your heart out."
The win snapped a streak of eight straight playoff losses by the Chiefs, who will now prepare to travel to New England next week, where they'll take on Tom Brady and the Patriots in the AFC Divisional round.
