'Mike & Molly' Officially Canceled After Season 6, CBS Confirms Dropping Melissa McCarthy Show
Following early reports last month regarding the cancellation of Mike & Molly, producers have confirmed that the sitcom starring Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell as the title characters has come to an end. Season 6, currently airing, will be the last one, according to CBS executives.
Business Insider reports that the confirmation came during the Television Critics Association press tour, and the source couldn't have possibly been more reliable. Glenn Geller, the President of CBS Entertainment, said the current season, with 13 episodes, would be the last one to air.
"These decisions are really challenging," said Geller. "I have tremendous respect for Chuck Lorre, Al Higgins, Melissa McCarthy, and Billy Gardell, and the entire cast. I can confirm that Mike and Molly is canceled."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, news of the show's cancellation had been leaked a while back, before the network's official cancellation. Stars McCarthy and Gardell both took to Twitter last month to say that the show had been pulled, and the actor even announced that the show's return on January 6 would only mark the last few episodes.
Only 13 episodes had been produced of the new season before the show was axed. Previous seasons, following the usual sitcom format, had 22 episodes.
Star McCarthy is already moving forward with a new television project, aside from her widely successful film career. She'll be producing a new comedy pilot for TV Land, Nobodies, with her husband, Ben Falcone.
In the meantime, Lorre, the show's creator, recently saw one of his most successful sitcoms ever come to an end. Two and a Half Men ended last year after a 12-year run, one of the longest shows of its kind on the small screen.
Still, it's hardly a time to be sad for the top CBS series maker as currently Lorre has two hit shows running with no plans of nearby cancellation: Mom and some show named The Big Bang Theory.
