Celine Dion's Brother Dies Days After Singer Loses Husband to Cancer
Tragedy has struck again for famous Canadian singer, Celine Dion. Her husband, René Angélil, died Thursday following a long battle of throat cancer. Now, just two days later, Dion's older brother, Daniel Dion, has died as well. He was 59.
Daniel reportedly died in the early hours of Saturday morning in Montreal. He had been battling multiple forms of cancer.
Shortly before Daniel's death, Dion's sister Claudette told the Journal of Montreal, "It's very painful. It's a matter of days or hours. It looks a lot like René, he had cancer of the throat, tongue and brain. Our family is very experienced."
Daniel was the eighth child in a family of 14 kids. Claudette also told the outlet that Daniel "was ready and he no longer suffers."
The news comes on the heels of the death of Dion's husband, who was also the singer's longtime manager and friend. The pair married in 1994 at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, where Angélil requested to be buried.
A post on the singer's Facebook page says of Angélil, "He will be remembered as a gentle man, generous and kind, an unprecedented visionary, a modern Pygmalion, a Renaissance man. All who had the privilege of knowing him and of working closely with him, whether personally or professionally, salute a leader and a man of great intelligence and wisdom."
The post continues, "As her manager, René Angélil made Céline Dion a star of international stature. ... He is now a part of the collective memory of the music industry, be it in Canada or elsewhere in the world."
Angélil's funeral will be held on Jan. 22, with Daniel's to follow a few days later. Dion canceled her upcoming Las Vegas Colosseum concerts following the news. The singer has three sons with Angélil.
