'Game of Thrones' Actor Ear Bitten Off: 'Casualty' Star Clive Mantle Asks Travelodge Guests to Quiet Down, Gets Attacked By Three Men
55-year-old Clive Mantle, who plays Greatjon Umber in the HBO series Game of Thrones, had a portion of his ear bitten off in a dispute with some guests at a Travelodge where he was staying. Mantle was asking some residents to keep their noise levels to a minimum when three men allegedly attacked the actor, resulting in one of them, a 32-year-old man from South Lanarkshire, biting a piece of his ear off. The attacker has since been charged with wounding with intent and has a court hearing set for next month. Mantle is also known for his work on "Casualty" and is currently performing "The Ladykillers" in Manchester.
He will check with a specialist today on whether yesterday's surgery was a success. A spokesperson has stated that Clive is "very badly shaken up. The part of the ear that was bitten off was found and sewn back on. Mr Mantle said the police, ambulance and hospital staff were amazing."
According to reports, Mantle cannot participate in "The Ladykillers" since makeup cannot go near his wound. Laura Myers, the publicist for the play, said: "Clive doesn't yet know when he will be able to rejoin the cast and feels he must mention the ambulance crew, police and hospital staff who were all superb."
Two other men were involved with the attack: one was not charged while the other was recently released on bail.
What is particularly interesting about this story is that his character in the Game of Thrones universe, Greatjon Umber, actually bites off half of the ear of a man during an altercation. This is just kind of ironic, wouldn't you say?
