With Marvel and DC releasing adaptations of heir most beloved characters this year, 2016 looks like the year to visit some superheroes at the movie theater. One of the most highly awaited films of the year is the third part of the mutant-based story, X-Men: Apocalypse, featuring Oscar Isaac's début as the title villain -- and now, director Bryan Singer talks spoilers!

During the last film of the franchise, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine went back in time to keep Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique from ruining everything. Of course, that action altered the timeline for the mutants' universe, and the film's director (who also helmed the sequel, coming out this year) talks about it.

"It's not leading necessarily toward exactly where we found Patrick Stewart and the X-Men at the beginning of X-Men 1," Singer told Collider recently, speaking about the current timeline in the films. "There are some things that lead in that general direction, that was part of the philosophy we had at the end of Days of Future Past is that you can't fully change the course or current of the river, but you can just divert it a little bit, and we diverted it a little bit."

So, now characters that were alive or dead when we were introduced to sir Ian McKellen as Magneto may have changed a little bit, for example, though there wasn't a lot of information on that regard.

The director also spoke about the new villain in town for this year's Apocalypse, portrayed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor Isaac. According to io9, Singer said the character doesn't have an actual physical form, because he's really more of an "energy." He also has an immense amount of power, including the ability to shield from psychic powers, which will make it pretty tough for Xavier (James McAvoy) to know what he's thinking.

Olivia Munn also spoke to JoBlo recently about her own mutant character, Psylocke, which was played by Meiling Melançon in X-Men: The Last Stand. The Newsroom actress described the character as "fearless."

X-Men: Apocalypse will be released on May 27.
