It seems like the world is still in shock over the announcement that Doctor Who writer and executive producer Steven Moffat has decided to leave the show after the conclusion of Series 10. Fans have reacted in social media, but it looks like one of Moffat's biggest admirers and former Doctor Who star Matt Smith has just spoken up about the showrunner's departure.

In an interview with Timey Wimey, Smith, who played the 11th Doctor from Series 5 to 7, was asked how he felt about Moffat's decision to leave Doctor Who.

"I'm sad he's leaving Doctor Who, I think he's done so much for it, he's done so much for me," Smith said before adding that it will not be the end for the show, since Chris Chibnall of Broadchurch will be taking over. "But you know, the show will always endure. There's a wonderful writer coming in, and as always, it's about regeneration and the reinvention of things," he said.

Smith also admitted that he was a great admirer of Moffat's work and is looking forward to the showrunner's future projects.

"He has done so much for the show and I just feel very privileged to work with, what I think is, you know, one of the greatest writers to have worked on the show," he said. "So yeah, it's sad to see him go but I'm excited to see what he does next."

Smith has done a lot since his own departure from Doctor Who. He appeared in Terminator Genisys as the physical embodiment of Skynet and will portray Mr. Collins in the film adaptation of the undead parody novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. In addition to that, Smith's next projects include the horror movie Patient Zero and the Netflix series The Crown.

Moffat will remain with Doctor Who until the end of Series 10 before leaving the show to Chibnall in 2018.
