'Frozen' News: "Let It Go" Goes Broadway & ABC Launching Queen Elsa Holiday Special!
Just as little girls all over the world were starting to really "Let It Go" with Frozen, Disney's Queen Elsa is coming back with a vengeance. In the latest Arendelle news, it turns out that, besides the planned sequel, there's a Broadway musical in the making and ABC will be releasing a holiday special starring the characters from the 2013 hit.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the next time fans get to see Queen Elsa, Princess Anna and the rest of the gang will be next year: ABC will be airing a holiday special in 2017 dedicated to Arendelle! True to form, the cast of the 2013 original will be coming back for this new project, and Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell and Josh Gad will be lending their voices for some more movie magic.
The directors of Prep & Landing, Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton, will be helming the Frozen Christmas special, with the support of Big Hero 6 producer, Roy Conli. So far, the project doesn't have an official release date, but as it's often the case with television projects, it seems more than likely that we won't hear the day until it's really close.
This will be the third time the cast gets together for the wintery tale: besides the 2013 film, last year there was a popular animated short, Frozen Fever (released in theaters with the live-action version of Cinderella), which revolved around Anna's birthday and Elsa getting sick during her sister's big day.
In the meantime, The New York Times reports other fun news about Frozen: Disney announced earlier this week that the tale, loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen, would be turned into a stage musical in spring of 2018. Ahead of its big release on Broadway, there will be a "developmental production" outside of New York.
This will be the ninth Disney musical on Broadway, following hits like Tony Award-winning The Lion King.
