'Deadpool' Creator Rob Liefeld Praises Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine

If there is anyone who should be really excited about Deadpool, it would be the Marvel character's creator Rob Liefeld. The Image Comics co-founder recently shared his thoughts on Ryan Reynolds' first portrayal of Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and couldn't help but praise the actor.

Liefeld spoke to Comic Book Resources about Wolverine, where he revealed that Reynolds' portrayal of Wade in the beginning of the film set his expectations pretty high.

"Look, you know what? It's a testimony," Liefeld said before explaining the good and bad side of the film.

"Why was that movie polarizing? Of course, it's because Deadpool wasn't portrayed in a way that anyone was familiar with. But it is because Ryan sold it so well in the first 20 minutes. Man, I'm like, 'That's him. That's him. Oh my gosh. That's him,'" he said.

"When he cuts the bullet and splits it in two, he's holding everybody in the elevator, he kinda gets on everybody's nerves. You're like, 'They're building something great.'"

Unfortunately, it goes downhill from there. By the end of the Hugh Jackman film, Wade is turned into the host of several different mutant powers and his mouth gets sewn shut. It was at this point that Liefeld felt everything went wrong with Wolverine.

"[Ryan] closes the deal in the first 20 minutes, and then you are like, 'Wait, uh, wait, uh, excuse me, Mr. Producer. What did we do there? That is not the Deadpool we know. Why are you calling that person Deadpool?'" he said.

Nevertheless, Liefeld is happy that Wade was portrayed by Reynolds, who he believes is the perfect person to play the character.

"There was never anybody else for that role," he said of Reynolds. "He fits the physical command of the character, and then that mouth of his -- I mean, Ryan's got it. He's got that lip. It is a great triumph for him. I'm so excited."

Reynolds will reprise his role as Wade (with proper red suit and uncensored mouth) in Deadpool, which hits theaters on February 12.
