George R.R. Martin Mentions Dead 'Game of Thrones' Character Ruins 'Winds of Winter' Twist?

Fans were understandably disappointed when George R.R. Martin announced that he has not yet finished The Winds of Winter.The sixth novel of his A Song of Ice and Fire book series will be published after the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 6. Now the author has confirmed that the HBO series might have some difficulties trying to get around an important twist that will be featured in the book because it involves a character that has already been killed off in the show!

Martin recently spoke to IGN, where he revealed that although he is far from done with The Winds of Winter, he has added a major twist in the book that he was originally going to omit because one of the characters involved has already been killed off in Game of Thrones. The writer did not specify which character it is, but there is a possibility that it will be one of GoT's most recent kills.

But who could this ASOIAF character possibly be? Although many fans would assume that it could be Jon Snow (Kit Harington), the character's fate was actually undecided at the end of A Dance with Dragons. In Game of Thrones, Jon's supposed death became one of the most shocking twists in the latest season finale.

There are speculations that Martin is referring to Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane), who was killed by Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) in "Mother's Mercy." Stannis has even appeared in the released chapter from The Winds of Winter, where he decides to sacrifice Theon Greyjoy to a heart tree for blood magic. Although Stannis intends to use the spell to gain power, it can also be used to resurrect the dead.

The truth will be revealed when Game of Thrones Season 6 finally premieres on HBO on April 24. There is no word yet on when The Winds of Winter will be published.
