Billy Joel Retired? 'Piano Man' Singer Puts Rumors to Rest, Going on Tour Again? 'American Idol' Season 12 Contestant Janelle Arthur Covers 'You May Be Right' [VIDEO]
In a new interview it sounds like music legend Billy Joel may be itching to get back on tour again. Could it be the "Piano Man" singer is jealous of all the attention aging rockers the Rolling Stones are getting with news of their new 2013 North American tour? The 63-year-old singer will be playing a few dates in April, and if all goes well, who knows.
Joel spoke with Rolling Stone Magazine and said if he were to go back on tour it wouldn't be the typical greatest hits show that he has done a lot over the past few years. Instead, the singer could look to bring back some of his older classics. "I'd like to do more songs that weren't hits. I got tired of doing the greatest hits set. It was boring playing the same songs over and over. There are a lot of songs the longtime fans want to hear," Joel told Rolling Stone.
The singer just had one of his songs used on season 12 of "American Idol" when the top seven contestants were tasked with singing rock songs. Female singer Janelle Arthur sang Joel's "You May Be Right" and did a pretty good job of covering the legendary performer. However, this surely isn't enough for Joel fans who would love to see Joel get back out on tour.
Joel will be playing the Stone Music Festival on April 21 in Australia followed by a performance at the New Orleans Jazz Fest less than a week later. Based off his interview with Rolling Stone, it sounds like Joel may be considering another tour. "When I sing, I'm singing really high," said Joel. "I've lowered the keys, but a lot of those things are really high. I need a few days to recover from every gig. But it would be silly to do just one gig every three months. You tie up the band and the crew. . . It would have to be more work than that."
Joel went on to clarify to Rolling Stone that what he said in an interview with an Australian newspaper wasn't him saying he was retiring. "I said I'd consider retiring if I didn't think I could do it well anymore," said Joel. "I never said I intended to retire. I never said, 'I'm gonna hang it up.' I was just kind of wondering, 'Gee, I wonder what happens when a musician gets to a point where he realizes he's not as good as he used to be?' That turned into 'Billy Joel May Retire After His Next Gigs.' I just want to put those rumors to rest because people keep asking me if I'm going to retire. . . I just love the game too much to not play it well."
It definitely sounds like Joel will at the very least continue to play sporadically for special events. However, if Joel gets the itch again, it sounds like fans may have the opportunity to see Joel on tour.
