'Gotham' Season 2 Spoilers: Robin Lord Taylor Teases Paul Reubens As Penguin's Father!
The back half of Gotham Season 2 will finally introduce Paul Reubens as Oswald Cobblepot's father, and it is a role that seems to have been tailor-made for the actor. However, Robin Lord Taylor, who plays Penguin in the Fox show, has just confirmed that he had a lot to do with Reubens' casting!
Taylor recently attended the Gotham mid-season premiere event in New York, where he told ComicBook.com that he had a meeting with the Pee-wee Herman actor with the help of a Gotham costar who plays his mother on the show.
"I met Paul Reubens a couple months before he was cast on Gotham, because he's best friends with Carol Kane," Taylor revealed. "Carol invited me and my husband to brunch, and said, 'My friend Paul is coming,' and we show up and it's Paul Reubens! He was in town doing Blacklist, and we had an amazing, lovely brunch."
Taylor admitted that he mentioned the idea to Reubens, claiming that it would make sense for the actor to play Kane's husband in the show.
"The whole time we kept talking about it, like, 'Oh man, Paul, wouldn't it be great if you played my dad? Carol's my mom and you guys are best friends,'" he said, adding that they also immortalized the meeting with a picture together, an image he showed to Gotham's executive producer.
"A couple weeks later I sent the photo to executive producer Danny Cannon, just like, 'Ha ha ha this happened!'" Taylor shared. "He wrote me back immediately and said, 'Oh my f--ing God, I've been trying to get him for three weeks! To play your father!' Then it actually came through and happened!"
This isn't the first time that Reubens will be playing Penguin's father. He had previously played the character in the 1992 Tim Burton film Batman Returns, where the DC villain was portrayed by Danny DeVito.
Gotham Season 2 airs on Fox every Monday nights.
