Kurt Cobain took his own life 19 years ago today. The death of the Nirvana frontman sent shockwaves of grief throughout the tightly-knit music scene of the Pacific Northwest as well as the world at large. For many Gen X-ers, it is one of the most memorable moments of their lives. Now the Seattle Post-Intelligencer is joining in the collective mourning that always marks this day with a series of previously unreleased photos surrounding the scene of Cobain's suicide.

Check out the photos at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer here.

The photos taken by Mike Urban and Phil Webber show the scene surrounding Cobain' home as news broke of his apparent suicide. You can see shots of medical examiners looking out from Cobain's greenhouse, photos of the coroner coming and going, Cobain's body being wheeled out on a stretcher underneath a sheet, reporters thronging and listening to police reporters, and mourners crying at public and private memorials.

From the P-I:

"Gary Smith, an employee for Veca Electric who no longer discusses the incident, found Cobain's body. Someone at his company tipped then-KXRX radio DJ Marty Riemer, who was the first to announce the musician's death, which the medical examiner determined was a suicide."

The Nirvana frontman is regularly remembered as one of the most influential musicians of his era. His band's albums and songs are perennial front-runners in various greatest of all time lists. Many fans mark the occasion of his death by listening to his albums, reading his journals and holding online vigils via social media.

His suicide in 1994 shocked the nation and left behind wife Courtney Love and daughter Frances Bean Cobain.

Rest In Peace, Kurt Donald Cobain (1967-1994).
