'Avengers: Infinity War' Teasers: Marvel Planning to Release Online 'One-Shots'
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has thrived since Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark first hit the screens in 2008's Iron Man -- so much that there are two planned MCU films this year. In the latest rumors, it seems the studio's planning to change things up when it's time to release teasers for its two-film event Avengers: Infinity War: new characters could be introduced through online One-Shots!
Russo brothers Anthony and Joe, who directed the two latest Captain America movies (including this year's upcoming superhero event, Captain America: Civil War), recently spoke to Forbes about Marvel's plans for the following films of the MCU, and they made a few big revelations when it comes to introducing new content.
Speaking about how it's pointless to create content made especially for home releases when nobody buys DVDs anymore, the filmmaker brothers said Marvel was currently securing a deal with YouTube and other content-sharing platforms to release new things for fans -- and they're currently focusing on releasing shorts to tease the upcoming Infinity War movies.
"We can't go into too many details about this, but we are thinking, very specifically, about to do new ways of what you are talking about with Avengers: Infinity War," said one of the brothers. "The platform is changing but it is a lot easier to sit on your couch and Apple TV pops up rather than you having to get up and find a DVD, so it is what it is, and there are always new and different ways to reach the audience."
For years, the MCU released a series of short films called One-Shots as extra content on the DVD/Blu Ray releases of their feature films, the last of which was All Hail the King, which featured sir Ben Kingsley in his Iron Man 3 role. It's been a while since Marvel has tried something similar (in the past they've also expanded on characters like Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson), but moving these shorts to a new platform could give new life to the Avengers.
The Russo brothers, who will be releasing Captain 3 this summer, have already said there are multiple new characters being introduced in the Infinity War movies, so it would make things much easier to understand if at least the minor characters are explored through shorts.
Avengers: Infinity War - Part I will be released on May 4, 2018, while its sequel, Avengers: Infinity War - Part II will be in theaters a year later on May 3, 2019.
