Disney Planning Live-Action Snow White Movie - About Princess' Sister Rose Red
Following its new trend of reviving some its classics on the big screen, Disney is now planning to give the world another live-action Snow White, but this time with a twist: the story won't be focusing on the raven-haired princess. Taking on a Brothers Grimm character, Disney's pursuing a new film starring Rose Red, Snow White's sister.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has picked up a script by Justin Merz and taken from an Evan Daugherty pitch, reworking the original story of Snow White into a new revised tale -- much like what happened on 2014's Maleficent.
The film, which will be called Rose Red, will see the previously unknown character of Snow White's sister taking the lead in the princess' tale. After Snow White takes a bite from the poisonous apple, it's up to her sister and the seven dwarves to find a way to bring the princess back to life, presumably without the true love's kiss.
Entertainment Weekly reports that the screenplay, based on an unrelated Brothers Grimm tale, had originally been written as a stand-alone film until Daugherty suggested the new princess was related to Snow White. That way, the new character would have a feeling of connection to the previously created Disney universe.
Daugherty must have had the classic character on his mind after working on it beforehand, as he was the one who wrote Snow White and the Huntsman, the film starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. However, considering the film was made by Universal (and it's getting a sequel this year, The Huntsman: Winter's War), it seems unlikely that any of the actors will be reprising their roles in Rose Red.
Aside from strong Maleficent-type elements, Rose Red sounds a little like another sequel/revisiting from Disney: The Lion King 1½. A decade after the original animated classic was released, the studio revisited the story by having two of the most beloved characters, Pumbaa and Timon, rewatch the original film's events from their perspective.
There's still no word on casting for Rose Red.
