'Glee' School Shooting: Recap of Fox's 'Shooting Star' Season 4, Episode 18 [VIDEO] Was McKinley High Gunshot Scene Too Soon After Newtown Shooting? Ryder Gets Catfished
Last night's "Glee" episode certainly gave viewers a lot to think about. Besides the cover songs and dancing, the show decided to touch upon an issue that is currently making headlines across America...gun violence. Who would of thought Thursday night's season 4 episode "Shooting Star," would actually mean a shooting? With all the talk surrounding off camera drama like the star of the show Cory Monteith (playing Finn) going into rehab for substance addiction, "Glee" did it's part to bring the drama back to the show itself. On last night's episode of "Glee," McKinley High was the scene of a school shooting just months after Adam Lanza killed students and faculty at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT. Was it too soon for "Glee" to air this episode?
After the Newtown school shooting massacre occurred a few months ago, gun violence and the gun control debate has been on the top of everyone's minds. You can't open a newspaper without reading the news surrounding the government's latest argument for or against more gun control. However, FOX's "Glee," usually the home of dancing, singing, and comedy took its turn at the controversial topic. You can't say you weren't warned though. "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy tweeted before last night's episode "Just saw the rough cut of next week's "Shooting Star". It is the most powerful emotional Glee ever. So proud of the cast & crew."
During last night's show, shots rang out at McKinley High causing panic among New Directions members. Will and Coach Beiste turn off the lights in the class room and try to keep everyone calm. After moments of terror in the choir room and members of New Directions filming their possible final goodbyes SWAT tells everyone the coast is clear.
After the shooting, where no one was hurt, the search begins for who fired the gun. Sue Sylvester comes forward and says it was her gun that was fired. However, we find out that she was actually lying to protect Becky who brought the gun into school and accidental fired it. As a result, Sue is fired from McKinley High. Does this mean Jane Lynch will no longer be on the show?
Outside the school shooting, which is what is grabbing headlines, "Glee" still had its usual singing and fun. Brittany confessed her love to her cat Lord Tubbington, which makes Sam jealous. Sam gets Brittany their own fat cat that they can have together. Brittany brings Lord Tubbington into school so New Directions can sing Extreme's "More than Words" to him.
"Glee" also touched on another topic that was making headlines not too long ago. Ryder finds out he was being Catfished by someone in school. However, when Ryder decides to call Katie to profess his love, it's during the school shooting scare. The phone rings in the choir room, but no one answers, leaving fans with a cliffhanger as to who catfishes Ryder.
Fans are left with some major cliffhangers after "Shooting Star." The catfish storyline, playing on the real life Manti Te'o drama is a pretty major angle, but got overshadowed by the gun shooting.
