MMA Fighter Joao Carvalho Dead 48 Hours After a "TKO" Against Charlie Ward
MStars News has learned some sad news from the mixed martial arts (MMA) world. Twenty-eight-year-old fighter, Joao Carvalho died 48 hours in hospital on Monday after suffering head injuries from a "TKO" against Charlie Ward in Dublin, Ireland.
According to CNN, Carvalho revealed that he was feeling under the weather after Saturday's fight. The fight was stopped by a referee in the third round. The Portuguese native was taken to hospital and had emergency brain surgery over the weekend and died while in intensive care.
A statement from Total Extreme Fighting (TEF), which hosted the event at Dublin's National Stadium, revealed that the MMA fighter was dead. The company's executive, Cesar Silva said: "We extend our most sincere condolences to the family of João Carvalho's and his teammates in Team Nobrega. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. We'd also like to thank all sports fans for their concern and support. We will give whatever support we can to Joao's family."
The statement continued: "We have been in contact with his family and they have requested that we all understand their need for privacy at this difficult time."
The referee working the fight that night also commented after Carvalho's death.
Mariusz Domasat said: "If you watch the fight you see clearly there was no reason to stop the fight earlier. I stopped the fight when there was a reason to stop the fight, when the fighter wasn't willing to fight anymore, that's it. Everyone who has any idea about MMA knows the fight was stopped at the exact proper time. I am an experienced referee and part of the Irish Amateur Pankration Association of Safe MMA and I know what I am doing."
Hopefully more safety rules increase after this tragic death. RIP.
