Lady Gaga: 'Mother Monster' Dissed by Yeah Yeah Yeahs Singer Karen O, Says There is 'Core Authenticity or Originality Lacking There', Talks About 'Gangnam Style' Singer Psy
When your one of the top people in your field you often times will face plenty of criticism from others. This seems to be the case with "Mother Monster" Lady Gaga who recently was dissed by the Yea Yea Yeahs singer Karen Orzolek. This isn't the first time this has happened, as Gaga as been criticized in the past by fellow female performers, including rapper M.I.A.. While Gaga rests up from her hip surgery that resulted in her cancelling her 2013 "Born This Way Ball" tour, she may also have to start avoiding shots form fellow musical artists.
Gaga is known for her outrageous styles and over the top performances, which is something the Yea Yea Yeas are also known for. So when The Guardian asked Karen O if the band had a type of kinship with Lady Gaga, due to the similarity of their performances and style, they were quick to shoot that idea down. "No, no, no!" Karen O told The Guardian. "I feel there's a core authenticity or originality lacking there. It's so referential."
Now, this could just be an off the cuff remark that may not have been well thought out, or maybe there is something sincere there. I would think, as a singer and musician, one of the worst things another musician could say about you is that you are lacking authenticity and originality. Those are some pretty damning comments from Karen O.
As the interview continues, you find that there may be some actual sincere criticism coming from the Yea Yea Yeahs lead singer towards Gaga. When asked if she was talking about Gaga when responding to a question about being considered sexy and not seeing herself that way, Karen O talked about the "Born this Way" singer again. "No, I think she's more unconventional, and I do appreciate that side of her and how her fanbase don't feel like they have to be dolls or whatever," said Karen O. "As far as her sexy factor goes, I don't find her too sexy either. But then I don't find many pop stars sexy... The only pop star I find sexy is Michael Jackson."
Karen O went on to explain that she has a special place in her heart for South Korean pop star Psy, who was made famous after his viral sensation "Gangnam Style." The half Korean, half Polish singer told The Guardian, "The first time I saw that video, I cried! I guess it's part of some weird repressed Korean nationalism [she is half Korean, half Polish] and maybe I associate it with my grandparents, who passed away recently. But a lot of my adult life I've been waiting for Seoul and Korea to be on the scene culturally, and when I saw that I just felt tickled. I was just happy!"
There you have it, another female singer taking a bit of a shot at Lady Gaga. Do you agree with Karen O, that Gaga is lacking authenticity and originality?
