KMart's 'Ship My Pants' Video: Commercial Becomes Viral YouTube and Social Media Success, Ad Garners A Lot of Negative and Positive Feedback, Promotes Store's Shipping Service
Kmart decided to go the humor and viral video route in their latest marketing campaign. Their 35 second video which has gone viral on YouTube, is a bit edgy, but also uses social media to market their commercial for them. The video titled, "Ship My Pants" has been a huge success on the Internet, but it remains to be seen if it translates into more sales for the national store. While some feel the "ship my pants" play on words is sophomoric and gross, others think it's not only a humorous video, but a great marketing idea.
The video was posted on YouTube April 10 and it already has over 7.5 million views as of April 15. That is a lot of eyes on your company's new commercial. The video is promoting the stores new delivery program and shipping service. You can use your own imagination to figure out what "ship my pants" is playing on, but the video consists of an employee telling a customer they can "ship" their pants fright from the store. A wide range of fellow customers then explain that they "shipped" their pants as well.
The viral video has nearly 27,000 "Likes" on Kmart's Facebook page, as well as nearly 15,000 shares, and over 2,500 comments. Although some of the comments and responses have been extremely negative, the company must be thrilled with the social media response from the video. Despite the negative comments, Kmart has gotten its fair share of positive comments as well. Facebook fan, Norbert R. Gabby said, "Great commercial, gets your attention and makes you smile. Good job." Kelly McCulley said, "This ad is hysterical! I'm giving KMart all my business now! That was some funny ship!!!" On the other side Lori Lalli commented, "I find this vulgar humor tasteless and NOT family-friendly." Tracy Moore replied, "Bad taste. When you have to resort to this kind of tactic to sell product then maybe you need to fall by the wayside. Somethings wrong here."
