Great Gatsby Soundtrack: Fergie, Q-Tip, GoonRock Release "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody" From Jay-Z Helmed Compilation [LISTEN]
When we think of the 1920s, we tend to think riotous jazzy parties and Fergie, Q-Tip and GoonRock appear to be well aware of this on their contribution to the Jay-Z helmed The Great Gatsby soundtrack, "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)."
The song starts out with Mrs. Duhamel pulling her best approximation of brassy vox while saxophones loop playfully in the background. We get about twenty seconds of this before GoonRock's euro-pop synths smash through the wall and lead the way for the rest of the song. Q-Tip turns in a passable verse before a nice and SEGA-y 16-bit breakdown from GoonRock at right around the 3-minute mark.
According to a press release, the goal of the soundtrack was "translating the Jazz Age sensibility of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel into the musical equivalents of our own times, through the blending of hip-hop, traditional jazz and other contemporary musical textures."
This song definitely mixes both the sounds of today and yesteryear. I'll leave it to you to decide whether that is a good thing.
The soundtrack also contains songs from The xx, Lana Del Ray, Jay-Z, Beyonce + Andre 3000 (covering Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black"), Florence + The Machine and many more.
