This week's episode of BBC One's legendary hit show, Doctor Who transported us back to 1983 onboard a Soviet nuclear submarine at the height of the Cold War. Aptly titled "Cold War," the episode might have been limited to jus the underwater ship, but it did involve an alien antagonist. The return of a Martian Ice Warrior was unexpected and greatly entertaining, especially when the audience realizes how dangerous this space soldier can be.  How did Clara handle this strange alien encounter in a submarine and how did it prepare her for this week's adventure with a haunted house in "Hide" (airing Saturday)? (SPOILERS to follow)

First of all, being on a Soviet nuclear submarine during the Cold War was scary enough; unfortunately there is always a bigger reason why The Doctor and the TARDIS show up where they do. Apparently hoping for a Las Vegas trip, The Doctor and Clara find themselves in a sinking submarine. Of course The Doctor is excited to find out where and when they are, but the crew is clearly dumbfounded by their appearance. Luckily he helps the submarine level off without everyone dying so they start to trust him a little.

But just like every story in Doctor Who things escalate from problematic to catastrophic. This submarine happens to have discovered some sort of fossil that has been frozen for 5,000 years. But its not a fossil, it's a Martian Ice Warrior and Ice Warriors are not exactly friendly. Plus this one is Skaldak, a very important and brutal Martian. After one crewmember electrocutes the warrior, war is officially declared on the whole crew.

The Doctor tries to talk to the now-tied-up Ice Warrior by using Clara (who volunteered) as a negotiator. But the Martian escapes by leaving his armor and then terrorizes the ship. But when Clara is talking to the alien, we find out that he just wants to find his people and that he desperately misses his daughter.

After killing a lot of the crew, Skaldak hesitates when Clara (who is visibly shaken by all of the dead bodies) begs him not to kill the scientist who has become a friend of hers. Clara remembers this when Skaldak threatens to launch the nuclear missile, thus starting the demise of Earth.

Clara steps up and reminds Skaldak of his daughter and how they would sing the Martian songs of war. Luckily a Martian ship finds Skaldak and takes him off of the submarine. Then the Ice Warrior disarms the warhead from the space ship. Clara saved the day!

Here is a behind-the-scenes look at "Cold War" with Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Next week's episode looks like one of the spookiest of The Doctor's travels. In "Hide" Clara and Eleven find themselves in a haunted house with an apparent ghost! Here is a preview clip:
