The Leftovers Season 3 Spoilers: Will Justin Theroux/Kevin Garvey "Crave" Guilty Remnant?
From creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrota, the Season 2 of The Leftovers continues to gain critical acclaim for HBO. In the upcoming Season 3 of The Leftovers, will Justin Theroux (Kevin Garvey) find himself "craving" the darkness of The Guilty Remnant?
As we mentioned before, in the second season finale, members of the Guilty Remnants marched across the bridge into the town of Jarden. It was suspenseful hour of miracles as Matt (Christopher Eccelston) discovered his paralyzed wife, Mary (Janel Moloney) walked and talking again. While the town was taken over by the cult, Kevin fought his way through Purgatory, singing Simon and Garfunkel's "Homeward Bound," order to return to the land of the living. As John (Kevin Carroll) witnessed his family fall apart, Kevin found himself reunited with his entire family, who were broken after the Departed.
In an interview with Variety, creator/showrunner Damon Lindelof discusses the meaning behind Kevin's internal struggles, "Audiences crave a level of depth and darkness, but this kind of internal darkness - deep, emotional darkness - doesn't settle with audiences. It's read as depression and despair. Audiences don't want to see characters wallowing in misery - they want to see characters trying to dig themselves out of holes. They want people who are vying for inner peace; trying to get out of the tunnel. They want to see a light at the end of the tunnel - not extinguishing a light."
The Lost executive producer adds, "We don't want darkness without relief. There has to be lightness and humor - a flicker of hope - or else audiences tune out if the show gets too dark. That was something we derived from the first season of 'The Leftovers.' I think the themes of the second season are just as dark, but if you go into unrelenting darkness and despair, American audiences will reject that outright."
We also mentioned, The Leftovers has been renewed for its final season. Don't forget to check out our MStars interview with author Tom Perrota about the sophomore season.
The second season of The Leftovers can currently be seen on HBO On Demand.
