The eighth season of the hit Showtime serial killer drama Dexter will be its last according to an announcement by the network. Thankfully, just a day after making the announcement, the network released the first teaser clip for what is now known to be the final season. This clip is about two minutes long and shows Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) interacting in a Miami supermarket. Clearly the season seven finale has taken its toll on Deb, considering she is drunk throughout the sneak peek. (SPOILERS to follow)

On Thursday Showtime Network's CEO and chairman Matthew C. Blank stated:

"When it debuted in 2006, Dexter redefined the genre, by taking the anti-hero to new heights and pushing the boundaries of the television landscape. Dexter paved the way for the next generation of award-winning hit Showtime series, and its cultural impact will be felt for years to come."

Even before the start of the seventh season Dexter producer Sara Cottleton started bracing audiences for the end:

"We wanted to end it this year, but the network convinced us that it would be best to do it in two years. In some ways, this is a two-season series-ender. We have worked that out and know where it's going to end."

She continued: "Next year will definitely be the last year of Dexter. Absolutely. From the very beginning, when I first started developing the pilot, I always knew it would be a seven-year arc for this series. I feel easily that we can be an eight-year show, but I never want it to get old and stale."

Season seven ended with a record high of 2.8 million for its finale. In the following clip, we see how the finale has affected Deb. She is drunk, she hates Dexter, and she feels that she shot the wrong person. What should we expect from the eighth and final season of Dexter?
