David Ortiz Pregame Statement: 'This Is Our F**king City,' Red Sox's 'Big Papi' Punctuates Ceremony for Boston Marathon Bombing Victims, Police With Strong Language, WATCH [VIDEO]
Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz knows how to punctuate the feelings of millions of Boston residents. After a week of tragedy, drama, and a couple scary standoffs that resulted in the city of Boston being put on lockdown for nearly a full day fans flocked to Fenway Park Saturday to watch their hometown Boston Red Sox take on the Kansas City Royals. In a pregame ceremony that featured the Boston and Watertown police departments, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and tributes to victims of the Boston marathon bombings, "Big Papi" made what may go down as the most poignant statements throughout this entire ordeal. Ortiz said, "This is our f**king city and no one is going to dictate our freedom. Stay strong."
In front of over 37,000 fans and an emotional crowd at Fenway Park, that just got through a 20 minute ceremony paying tribute to the victims of the Boston marathon bombings and the police departments who helped bring justice to the two suspects involved, David "Big Papi" Ortiz summed up how everyone was feeling in one poignant statement. There probably were plenty of other people who wanted to say it, but it just wouldn't have come across as appropriate. However, Ortiz didn't care, and good for him.
Victims of Monday's bombing were brought on the field to throw out the ceremonial first pitches along with members of the Boston and Watertown police departments, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and police commissioner Ed Davis. Obviously, the ceremony brought about a wide range of emotions, just as the entire week has for Boston and the rest of the nation.
Although some could argue Ortiz's statement, in front of crowd that certainly contained plenty of children, could have went without the curse word used, but I'm sure others would argue if there ever was a time to use the word he did, it was then. According to reports, the response to Ortiz's statement was one of the loudest during the entire pregame ceremony.
The 37-year-old slugger has been a member of the Boston Red Sox since 2003, winning two world championships with the team in 2004 and 2007. Ortiz is arguably the most recognizable player on the Red Sox and represents their team to the city of Boston better than any other player. Ortiz also just happened to making his return to the field following a stint on the 15-day disabled list. It didn't take him long to make an impact.
You can watch the video of Ortiz's pregame statements. Obviously, since there is a curse word involved it's NSFW.
