Benedict Cumberbatch has more than one face in 'Doctor Strange'
As Doctor Strange hits UK shores, fans are treated with a pleasant surprise. Benedict Cumberbatch, the actor behind the Sorcerer Supreme, is seen as another character in the film. Be warned, though, as spoilers are about to ensue.
In the film's final act, the villain Kaecilius(played by actor Mads Mikkelsen) summons the Dread Dormammu. This CG villain, however, was not credited to anyone. Who, then, gave life to this amazing character?According to director Scott Derrickson, in his interview with IGN, the character was brought to life by a couple of actors, and Cumberbatch is one of them.
"The vocalization was a British male artist whose name I don't know, and Benedict - Benedict did the facial capture concept." Derrickson goes on as how the role of Dormammu was molded to be an ultra-inflated version of the Sorcerer Supreme.
When asked if the move was made to defer the casting of the character, like what happened to the titan Thanos, Derrickson clarified that that was not the case. It should be remembered that when Thanos was debuted on the first Avengers movie, no actor was casted for the role. Josh Brolin, who appeared as the titan on Guardians of the Galaxy, was cast a good two years after the first appearance.
According to ScreenRant this was not the first time for Cumberbatch, known for the series "Sherlock", to do some motion capture work. He also did the mo-cap for the character Smaug for Peter Jackson's Hobbit Trilogy.
This is a very interesting move for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, as they are not known for using their stars in multiple roles. Paul Bettany was the first actor to do so, provided the voice of Jarvis, he then continued to play the role of Vision, starting in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Hopefully, this would not be the last appearance of Dormammu. According to Comicbook, Derrickson admitted that the sequel for Doctor Strange will have a heavy focus on villains. Being a fan of the comics himself, Derrickson hints that the first movie is just the tip of the iceberg.
