Director spills beans on Aquaman and Mera love story
The Aquaman movie for 2018 will feature a crazy hate-turned-love chemistry between Aquaman and Mera, according to director James Wan.
In the interview with Bustle, Wan likens the mechanic between Jason Mamoa's Aquaman and Amber Heard's Mera to that of 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark and 1984's Romancing the Stone. These movies featured leads that started off on the wrong foot, getting on each other's nerves, until developing feelings for each other and falling in love at the end of the movie. He wants to achieve a "classic action-adventure-romance aspect" for the film, set to premier a year after Zack Snyder's Justice League. The said chemistry between them will also be seen on Justice League, where both characters will be part of.
As TheMovieNetwork puts it, it is possible that the upcoming Aquaman movie would be a prequel of sorts, since it appears to show how Aquaman and Mera's relationship develops. As Wan gives more details on how the dynamic goes, he shares that the film would start off with Mamoa and Heard's characters clashing against each other. As the story goes on, they would need to work together and gradually draw closer with one another.
More was revealed during the discussion from Bustle, one of which was the character of Mera, the Queen of Atlantis. As Wan shares, Amber's character (Mera) is very strong and powerful. She's someone that no one would want to mess with. Her strength, though, will be equaled by her feminine qualities. Her character is molded to contrast Mamoa's Aquaman, who, Wan describes, is "more of a muscular machine."
The chemistry between the characters would be very interesting to be seen on screen, and fans would have to wait a couple of more years to see how everything would play out for the king and queen of the Atlantean Kingdom.
