Tom Cruise, 'Oblivion' Tops Weekend Box Office Results: New Movie Pulls in Over $38 Million, Jackie Robinson Biopic '42' Comes in Second
It looks like Tom Cruise still has it. Cruise is still a huge movie star if you're judging him by the box office results from this past weekend. According to reports, Cruise's sci-fi flick "Oblivion" opened this weekend to $38.2 million at the box office. The Universal movie also starring Morgan Freeman blew away the competition with the Jackie Robinson biopic "42" coming in second place during it's second weekend at the box office with $18 million.
Overseas, "Oblivion" was in its second weekend, pulling in a strong $33.7 million, bringing the movie's worldwide box office total to over $150 million. According to NBC News, this makes "Oblivion" Cruise's second biggest North American opening after "Mission: Impossible."
"Oblivion" was directed by Joseph Kosinski and reportedly cost about $120 million to produce. According to the IMDB page synopsis the movie is about "A veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself." Rounding out the top five at the box office was "The Croods" with $9.5 million, "Scary Movie 5" with $6.3 million, and "G.I. Joe Retaliation" with $5.8 million. The top 10 box office results from this past weekend are below.
