Huey Lewis Car Theft: Accused Thief Pleads Guilty to Stealing 'The News' Singer's Rental Earlier in 2013
Huey Lewis (the lead singer of the pop rock band Huey Lewis and the News) had a rental car of his stolen earlier this year. The 65-year-old musician and actor lost his rental car at a Holiday Inn Express in Mill Valley, California. After some time, the police tracked down 31-year-old Katherine Bowyer Gallagher who has since taken a plea deal in the case of the theft.
According to what Lewis told the police, the singer idled the car in the motel parking lot in order to run in and grab a receipt. Although he returned very quickly, the 2012 Toyota Corrola was nowhere to be seen. Along with the rental car, numerous personal items including a laptop were missing due to them being inside the stolen vehicle.
Four days later, after an initial investigation failed to come up with any suspects, the California Highway Patrol received a tip that led them to Gallagher. Witnesses reportedly saw the accused, who was known to be a local transient, around the Holiday Inn Express at the time of the theft. While a few officers were investigating the crime scene, they happened upon Gallagher and the vehicle. She was immediately stopped, identified, and booked. She was arrested for vehicle theft and possession of stolen property.
In her plea bargain, Gallagher was able to get the car theft charges dropped.
Here is an excerpt from the Inquistr that details some of the details of the case:
"Instead, the woman pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property in exchange for a sentence of 50 days behind bars. Although she is set to receive formal sentencing in the case next month, Gallagher has reportedly racked up enough jail credits to effectively remain free after sentencing is handed down by the courts. According to the terms of her agreement with prosecutors, once she satisfactorily pays restitution for the theft of Huey Lewis' rental car and personal belongings, Gallagher's conviction can be reduced to a mere misdemeanor."
Huey Lewis has yet to comment on this incident.
