WWE Survivor Series 2016 Ends with Upsetting Goldberg Win
The WWE has been building up the hype for this year's Survivor Series, with Brock Lesnar and Goldberg headlining the Pay-per-view event. Unfortunately, in an unexpected one-way match, Goldberg took the win, much to the surprise of the audience.
The four-hour event on November 20th had the company's Raw and SmackDown brands against each other in Toronto's Air Canada Centre. As the thirteenth Survival Series, it was also monumental for WWE, being the first time the event returned Canada after 1997's Survivor Series, which featured the infamous Montreal Screwjob.
The Pre-show's first match had Rich Swann, TJ Perkins and Noam Dar up against Tony Nese, Ariya Daivari and Drew Gulak in a six-man cruiserweight match. As the momentum went back and forth for the teams, it was Swann's 450 splash on Daivari that gave the win for his team. Kane and Luke Harper took the stage, er, ring for the second match, with Kane showing his dominance early on. Harper tries to gain some ground, though Kane's signature chokeslam ends the match in his favor.
Moving on to the main show, the "divas" of Raw and SmackDown met on a 5-on-5 traditional elimination match. Team SmackDown leader Nikki Bella was taken out before the match by the brand's General Manager Daniel Bryan, after a backstage attack. Forbes, though, interestingly adds that the attacker may be from her team, playing the "dysfunctional" card. Natalya took Bella's place, and as the bodies go flying one by one, Becky Lynch ends up standing alone against Bayley and Charlotte Flair, with Bayley scoring the win for Raw with a pin. The match ends with Flair, the Raw women's champ, slamming Bayley on the security barricade, thus staring a possible feud.
The next card pits The Miz against Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental title. Just as Zayn was getting the advantage, Maryse's distraction allowed The Miz to regroup and focus on Zayn's leg. While almost losing due to some near falls, another distraction from the Champ's wife, this time by ringing the bell, ended the match in favor of the Champ with a pin.
Another elimination match takes place, this time in a 10-on-10 Tag Team match-up. Cesaro sealed the deal for Raw, with Jay Uso tapping out of his sharpshooter.
Brian Kendrick retains the Cruiserweight title through disqualification against Kalisto in the next match. The advantage went back and forth, Kendrick grounding the "King of Flight", while Kalisto responds with a flurry of attacks. Just as when things were about to end, Baron Corbin makes an appearance and drives Kalisto to the mat, signaling the end of the match.
Team Raw gets off to a bad start on the Men's match against Team SmackDown, as infighting ensued early on the match. SmackDown gained the upper hand and took the win as the Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Randy Orton) laid waste on Roman Reigns. SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon took a spear from Reigns during the match, which resulted in a legitimate injury.
As for the much-awaited main event, it started with Lesnar at the receiving end of two spears from Goldberg, who then finished up "The Beast" with a Jackhammer. After the three-count, the match was over. Bleacher Report refers to the bout as a "cop-out", with the buildup wasted by an unimpressive finish.
The match was almost a repeat of 2004's WrestleMania XX, wherein their match, which had "Stone Cold" Steve Austin as a guest referee, ended a Goldberg win using the same repertoire, with two spears and a Jackhammer.
