Zach Braff Kickstarter [VIDEO]: 'Garden State' Director/Star Raising Funds for New Movie 'Wish I Was Here,' Asks for $2 Million
Zack Braff is known mostly for his television career on "Scrubs" and also his writing and directing debut Garden State. The 2004 film starred Braff alongside Natalie Portman and Peter Sarsgaard. It also garnered an Academy Award nomination for Braff. So why has he not attempted another project like it? Well he has recently announced a new directorial project, Wish I Was Here, and is funding it through Kickstarter. In the video accompanying the project's webpage, Mr. Braff explains why he just got back into the writing and directing world.
In his explanation of why he has yet to make a new film, the 38-year-old writer/director says that he was offered funding for the project Wish I Was Here, but that means these partners would want casting and final cut privileges. Braff goes into more detail for these circumstances in his informational yet comedic video.
For instance, he says that if he wanted Jim Parsons (who was in Garden State and has since won multiple Emmy awards for "The Big Bang Theory) for a specific role, these producers could change the character and even change the actor portraying that character. Parsons then appears in the video to add to the funny explanation.
Braff also brings in Donald Faison for another example of how the "money people" would interfere with the project in a negative way.
He then explains how the success of the Veronica Mars film funding through Kickstarter lead him to the site. Here is an excerpt from his written explanation on the page (which he also addresses in the video):
"After I saw the incredible way "Veronica Mars" fans rallied around Kristen Bell and her show's creator Rob Thomas, I couldn't help but think (like I'm sure so many other independent filmmakers did) maybe there is a new way to finance smaller, personal films that didn't involve signing away all your artistic control."

Like most Kickstarter pages, certain donations get a specific "reward" from the project. For instance, if you donate $60 to the cause, you receive "Framable Art Prints." Also, if you donate $10,000 or more you get to be a cast member!
