With fans of all ages, it is no longer surprising to know that 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' hits box office this yuletide season. As a proof that Star Wars franchise is an all-time favorite, just on Christmas Eve, 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' astoundingly earned a whooping $15 million and has been expected to haul over globally more than $500 million in a matter of days. And that's not the best part of it. This spin-off includes a plot that fans would never expect to appear in a Star Wars movie.

The family-friendly movie, 'Sing', which is the best choice for moviegoers with kids, got ahead of the other films with an impressive $7.9 million. Sony's 'Passengers' followed with a decent $2.9 million. Fox's 'Assassin's Creed' ranks third grossing film, while "Why Him?' lags behind with only $1.8 million as cited in an article on Variety.

With a rather thrifty production budget of $75 million, 'Sing' prides on some of the world's greatest voice cast, including the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award winner, Matthew McConaughey, the American actress and producer, Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon, and the acclaimed TV producer and film maker, Seth MacFarlane. Sing also includes popular soundtrack from the likes of Taylor Swift, Queen, Stevie Wonder, and the late George Michael.

The sci-fi movie, 'Passengers' starred by Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt had difficulty making a mark. According to a report on Reuters, "Passengers' only earned a relatively low end of $30.4 million within a five-day period. The film actually had a production budget of about $110 million. However, Sony executives, claimed that 'Passengers' is indeed doing good, pointing to the film's Christmas day grosses of $7.5 million. They believe that it will only perform far too well with older audiences all throughout the Christmas break.

Another movie that did not create a big impression is the video game adaptation, 'Assassin's Creed' by Fox. Over the six day period, the film only generated $22.5 million. It failed to break even with its production budget of $125 million. Like the film, 'Passengers', 'Assassin's Creed' will have to get a warmer reception worldwide if it truly wants to struggle its way into the black.
Above all, all three major new movies should really try to cover ground in the days to come. Moviegoers will enjoy the week between Christmas and New Year's as brief break; going to cinemas becomes a very attractive free time activity.
