There have been a lot of horror films set in outer space, in the lowest depths of the sea, and in the deepest parts of the jungle. But Syfy aims to break that cliché with a new thriller film titled "Atomica", which take place in a nuclear power plant.

Yesterday, the Syfy cable network announced that it would be releasing its new film in cinemas nationwide on March 17, 2017. It will be available for VOD or digital viewing on March 21, as per a Screen Anarchy article.

Brand new horror in Syfy film 'Atomica'

The film is directed by Dagen Merrill, who was also behind works such as "Broken Hill" and "Murder in the Dark", among others. One of the writers of "Atomica" is Kevin Burke, who Merrill had worked with in "Beneath". Burke also wrote for the animated TV shows "Ultimate Spider-Man" and "Avengers Assemble".

The film's story revolves around a young safety instructor, Abby Dixon, who is dragged into a remote nuclear plant to repair communications. The plant is ominously located in an isolated part of the desert.

When their communications go offline, Dixon is tasked to investigate. Things take a turn for the strange when she notices something creepy with the two employees at the plant.

Will 'Atomica' be a unique horror film?

"Atomica" has a small but powerful cast. Deadline reports that Sarah Habel will play Abby Dixon, who will go up against the unpredictable nuclear plant employees to be played by Dominic Monaghan and Tom Sizemore.

There has been a surprising rise in horror and thriller films in the past few years. In 2016 alone, US cinemas were packed with people who went to see "The Conjuring 2", "Lights Out", "The Purge: Election Year", "The Boy", "Clown", "The Forest", and "Don't Breathe", among others. Many are expecting Syfy's new thriller film will breathe new life into the tried and tested horror genre.
