'The Vampire Diaries' Series Spoilers:Elena Will Be Part Of Finale Regardless Of Dobrev Return

Will she or won't she? Fans of The CW's hit series "The Vampire Diaries" had high hopes that lead actress Nina Dobrev will rejoin the show for its final season but now that the show is preparing to reach its final curtain call in March, the actress has yet to confirm her commitment.

It can be recalled that in an earlier interview with series creator Julie Plec, she was heavily hinging on Elena, Dobrev's character, to return to properly close out the series after eight seasons.  It can be recalled that Dobrev left the show in the finale of Season 6 and her character has been sleeping and will only awaken if Bonnie dies.

Plec said to ET that she wants Nina to be part of the final season and that Nina also wants to be part of the show's farewell episodes but they were having trouble juggling with the schedule. She said that she remained hopeful that things will work out for the show's favor and would be devastated if the schedule becomes the cause that Elena or Katherine would not be able to return.

However, it seems that the show has a Plan B in place if Dobrev fails to return to the franchise. In this scenario, Dobrev's arc will still be part of the show no matter what.

In a TVLine interview with actor Ian Somerhalder, who plays the vampire Damon in the series, Elena will still be part of the finale whether Dobrev works with them physically or not. The report hinted that Sybil's attempt to manipulate Damon will play heavily into the Elena-centric arc.

"Elena never really left. She's always ever-present, and she plays a great deal into Damon's morality, his understanding of who he is - especially in these last episodes," he said.

The actor explained that Elena's approval has been one of the motivations that affect Damon's decision making and this means that whether Dobrev is able to work with fresh episodes or not, she is still part of "The Vampire Diaries" family.

"The Vampire Diaries" is set to air its final episode on March 10. The show will be replaced on its timeslot by its spinoff show, "The Originals" which is set to begin its fourth season.
