'Pacific Rim' Trailer [VIDEO]: Guillermo Del Toro Debuts New Movie Footage at WonderCon 2013
Guillermo Del Toro recently premiered a new full-length trailer for the science fiction action movie Pacific Rim at WonderCon. At the convention, the legendary director deemed the footage to be "for our eyes only," but thankfully this extended look at the anticipated film is now available online. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day. This movie's scale is clearly the attraction since it is a story about giant monsters being fought by giant robots.

Besides debuting this footage at WonderCon, Del Toro also held a Pacific Rim panel discussion where he talked about the film. Thankfully, the good people at SlashFilm took some notes during the panel. Here are some of the notes:
- The film focuses heavily on how society would react to being constantly invaded by aliens. This happens in the script, and is also layered in through visuals like "Kaiju warning" signs, etc.
- Del Toro thinks Day's character looks like Rick Moranis, JJ Abrams and a nerdy Bradley Cooper at different times throughout the film.
- There are 12 monsters and 9 robots in the movie. They settled on them from dozens of designs by doing a dailyAmerican Idolvote off. From there, each got refined and personalized to their needs and countries.
- The Jaegers weren't done with mocap because only straight animation could capture the size and weight.
- Pacific Rimhas been the best experience making a movie he's ever had because he and the studio are making the same movie. The worst experience he ever had?Mimic. "They wanted to makeAlien, I wanted to makeMimic."
- They're going to soon release a prequel graphic novel calledPacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero, which will expand on backstory of the world inPacific Rim. Here's the cover.
Here is the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
