Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan Defended 'Fifty Shades Darker' From Domestic Violence Allegations
Ever since it was announced that the "Fifty Shades" Trilogy will have its own movie adaptation, many controversies began to surface surrounding the novel, the actors, and the movie itself. As an erotic movie which contains mostly taboo discussions on S&M, many had condemned the story of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.
Finally, the actors of the just-released sequel, "Fifty Shades Darker" addressed the allegations of violence that the film allegedly delivers to the audience. Actress Dakota Johnson, also known as Anastasia in the erotic trilogy, dismissed the accusations that the film portrays domestic violence. Johnson responded to the critics that they would actually be inspired by the character of Ana.
She then defended that she saw Anastasia as the opposite of a victim. "I think she carries herself with such integrity and self-worth that maybe if they watched it they would feel a little bit inspired. I think if those people were to see the film they would see that Anastasia is an incredibly empowered young woman and everything she does is of her own volition," Johnson told the Press Association.
The accusations were caused by the protesters during the "Fifty Shades Darker" UK premiere. The campaigners argued that the film, which was based on the best-selling novels by E.L. James in the same name, were normalizing abuse and it perpetuates damaging stereotypes.
Meanwhile, lead actor Jamie Dornan, who plays billionaire Christian Grey in "Fifty Shades Darker" and "Fifty Shades of Grey" also defended the film. Dornan emphasized that the biggest part of S&M is boundaries, having a safe word. He added that people only do it because they want to, nobody forces you into it. Being someone who does not do it in real life, Jamie is aware that many people in the world do S&M and there is nothing wrong in loving the act for it is their right. Closing the argument, Jamie simply stated that S&M should importantly be consensual.
Despite the protests and violence allegations, the "Fifty Shades Darker" continues to garner success for it has already grossed over $146.9 million across the world in its weekend opening only, according to The Telegraph.
