James Blake Plays Letterman, Watch Blake Perform "Retrograde" On Late Show [VIDEO]
I'll be honest; I've never been the biggest James Blake fan. But this performance of his song "Retrograde" on the Late Show with David Letterman is just tops. Slow songs on Letterman tend to flop, as you can just kind of feel the live audience sitting in confused silence, but Blake's haunting, echo-y vocals seemed to fill the space and kept me riveted the whole way through.
Blake was on the show to promote his upcoming LP Overgrown. Check out the performance below:
Bonus points for Letterman at the end being mystified by a Moog.
"What is that? Did you build it yourself?" he asks the band member.
"It's like bass pedals but you play it with your hands," said Paul Shaffer. "Them and Rush are the only times you'll see one of those."
Double bonus points for the fact that Letterman never actually speaks to Blake in the post-song reaction.
Blake makes music with the confusing tag of "post-dubstep." His album Overgrown is in stores now.
