"Riverdale" Season 2 may shift from a murder mystery to a zombie plot. This is what series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa hinted when asked to comment on rumors that zombies will appear in the installment.

Aguirre-Sacasa says "Riverdale" Season 2 might no longer be a murder mystery just like Season 1. Instead, the storyline could go darker. The showrunner hinted at a zombie plot in the installment when he admitted that he is open to this possibility. "There are a lot of zombie shows, so if we did go there, I think we'd lean into the Lovecraftian horrors or it would be like the Evil Dead zombies," Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly.

Adding fuel to speculations that "Riverdale" Season 2 will feature zombies is the arrival of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The series creator confirmed that she will make an appearance in the show, possibly early in the installment or in Season 1.

According to Metro, Sabrina's arrival in "Riverdale" Season 2 alludes to the spinoff "Archie" comics titled "Afterlife with Archie." In this story, the timeline is set in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies roam Riverdale after Sabrina uses dark magic to bring back Jughead's dead dog to life. The dog lived as a zombie and ultimately bites Jughead, which then spurs the zombie plague in Riverdale.

"Riverdale" Season 2 could adapt the story from "Afterlife with Archie" to TV screens. After all, Aguirre-Sacasa says he wants to bring Sabrina to the show without using supernatural elements.

Aside from Sabrina's arrival, Season 1 already hinted at the appearance of zombies in "Riverdale" Season 2. In Episode 5, "Heart of Darkness" Cheryl saw a vision of his dead brother Jason Blossom as the undead. Likewise, the way that Jason was killed hints he could be a zombie. He was shot in the head, which is how one kills the undead.
