Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy: Hollywood Praises Actress on Twitter for 'Brave' Decision, 'My Medical Choice'

In today's New York Times piece entitled "My Medical Choice," Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie revealed that she underwent a double mastectomy surgical procedure this past February in order to reduce the risk of breast cancer. This procedure was completed on April 27. The Girl, Interrupted star explained, "My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman" - and she was not willing to take such a chance.  As a result, Jolie has seen an outpouring of support from the Hollywood community including Sheryl Crow, Questlove and Dr. Drew.

In the New York Times piece Jolie wrote:

"I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people's hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action."
