‘Sherlock’ Season 5 Release Update: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman Talks Renewal
Fans are still anticipating any news or update about the release of "Sherlock" Season 5. BBC remained mum on the show's renewal, although stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are optimistic.
According to TV Series Finale, Cumberbatch expressed his interest in returning as the titular character if there will be a "Sherlock" Season 5. The "Doctor Strange" star said that he would "never say never" on the show. He admitted that he would love to revisit the series and keep revisiting it if needed. "The idea of never playing him again is really galling," he said.
Series creator Steven Moffat backed up Cumberbatch's words. He confirmed that the lead star is intent on carrying on. Moffat also expressed his interest in seeing "Sherlock" Season 5 happen. However, he clarified that he has not sat down with the casts yet to talk about a potential renewal.
Freeman, on the other hand, is also hopeful for "Sherlock" Season 5 to happen. However, he is also open to the possibility that the show may not return after Season 4. "This last [season] did have a feeling of - I don't know whether it has a finality to it - but it certainly had a feeling of a pause and I am never ever afraid of things ending," he said.
As it stands, no one knows for sure if there is a "Sherlock" Season 5. BBC has yet to announce its interest to host the series, despite the casts and Moffat's interest to return. According to The Independent, a source from the network believes that the show will definitely return, but it is unclear when.
The possibility of "Sherlock" Season 5 happening depends on the availability of its casts. Cumberbatch and Freeman are busy with other film projects. Regardless, Moffat hinted that there will be a renewal when he said, "I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show."
