Daft Punk New Album: 'Random Access Memories' Duo Admit They Thought 'EDM' Was A DJ's Name, Trash Deadmau5 In Interview
Daft Punk is making the interview rounds in support of their new album Random Access Memories. While they've already given a track-by-track breakdown of RAM and trashed EDM publicly, they took it to another level in their interview with NME. The French electro titans admitted that they didn't realize what 'EDM' was for quite (and bash Deadmau5 for good measure).
"I don't know EDM artists or the albums. At first I thought it was all just one guy, some DJ called EDM," said Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo.
"Maybe it's just one guy called Eric David Morris," said bandmate Thomas Bangalter.
After admitting their mistake, they continued on their seemingly endless anti-EDM crusade.
"EDM is energy only. It lacks depth," said De Homem-Christo. "You can have energy in music and dance to it but still have soul."
Not content to make vague generalizations, the duo admitted to liking some EDM artists while despising others.
"Skrillex we have a lot of respect for," said Bangalter. "He's said that he saw our live show with the pyramid in 2007 and it made him want to make music, but it feels like he's not copying our formula. He might be the kid that breaks the cycle, but we don't listen to a lot of electronic music. We never did."
"I wouldn't listen to Deadmau5 for pleasure," he said.
This anti-EDM stance echoes earlier interviews from the band. In a recent interview with The Guardian DP criticized the homogenous nature of modern dance music.
"It's not moving one inch," Bangalter said. "That's not what artists are supposed to do."
"Today, electronic music is made in airports and hotel rooms, by DJs traveling," Bangalter added. "It has a sense of movement, maybe, but it's not the same vibe as going into these studios that contain specific things ... You hear a song - whose track is it? There's no signature."
Random Access Memories is streaming via iTunes and hits shelves on May 21.
