Kanye West 'Yeezus' Album Title, Release Date, Cover Art Confirmed by Kim Kardashian [WATCH]: SNL Performances of 'Black Skinhead' & 'New Slaves,' Launch of 'Yeezy Season'
"Yeezy Season" has officially begun!
This weekend, some of the mystery behind Kanye West's upcoming album, entitled "Yeezus," was unveiled. Kanye's girlfriend and "baby mama," Kim Kardashian, confirmed speculations about her man's newest project including the "Yeezus" title, its June 18th release date, the cover art, and even a look at West's "Red Yeezy" sneaker line.
As for the music, Kanye West aka "Yeezy" debuted two new tracks, "New Slaves" and "Black Skinhead," while performing on NBC's Saturday Night Live season finale May 18th. As Us Weekly reports, it was Bill Hader's last episode on SNL and Ben Affleck's fifth time hosting, but the musical performer stole the spotlight Saturday night.
Kim Kardashian posted the following tweet before her beau's SNL performance:
"#Yeezus #RedYeezy's #SNL #Tonight #NewSlaves #YeezySeason #Donda #June18"
The hashtags and the attached picture (above) reveal some major details about West's follow up record to 2010's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy & hinted at what was to come in his SNL performance:
"Yeezus"= album title, Red Yeezys= West's new unreleased sneaker line (as seen in the pic of Red Nike's), June 18th= "Yeezus" LP release date, DONDA= the name of Kanye's late mother & his design company), "New Slaves" is the title of the new song West performed on SNL last night, and "Yeezy Season" is the launch of Kanye's "takeover" under his new name with his new record.
The cover art for "Yeezus" is also revealed in Kim's picture. As Vibe notes, the casing for West's sixth studio album Yeezus looks like it depicts the melted, distorted gold face of a Jesus or West chain. The packaging was put up on Kanye's official website along with a link to pre-order the album digitally ($9.99) or order a physical copy ($14.99).
The first track that Yeezy dropped off the LP was titled "I Am A God," and the newly revealed album title reveals that West will apparently continue to play on Jesus and religion with "Yeezus."
Kanye's first song that he performed from "Yeezus" on SNL was "Black Skinhead," which Us Weekly described as "an intense, energetic number that sampled Marilyn Manson's "Beautiful People" over heavy drum beats."
West utilized a projection screen behind him, which featured flashing images of barking dogs and other "abstractly disturbing black-and-white imagery with colorful vintage price tags and the declaration "Not for sale," reports Rolling Stone.
West later tweeted a photo of the lyrics written out by hand, including the lines "You see a black man with a white woman/at the top floor they gone come to kill King Kong/Middle America packed in/came to see me in my black skin."
In an interview, Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter, who laid down the live and programmed drums for the LP, said that West was "kind of screaming primally, actually" through the recording session for his "raw" new album. The SNL performance of "Black Skinhead" also reflected this primal screaming:
For his second set, West returned to the stage with his "anti-establishment" track "New Slaves," which the rapper debuted on Friday, May 17, when he projected the video for the new song on 66 buildings around the world, in cities including New York, Toronto, Chicago, London, Paris, and Berlin (as seen in the primary photo above). He released the locations on his personal website, indicating the locations with red dots indicating the precise locations on a world map the day of.
"NEW SONG AND VISUAL FROM MY NEW ALBUM BEING PROJECTED TONIGHT ACROSS THE GLOBE ON 66 BUILDINGS, LOCATIONS @ https://KANYEWEST.COM" the rapper tweeted on May 17th.
During the SNL "New Slaves" performance, a track which features vocals by Frank Ocean, Kanye stood completely still and let the audience focus on the words. A close-up of his own face was projected behind him as he rapped lyrics that included: "My mama was raised in an era when / Clean water was only served to the fairer skin / Doing clothes you would have thought I had help / But they wouldn't be satisfied unless I picked the cotton myself."
What are your thoughts about Kanye West's new tracks and the beginning of "Yeezy season?"
