At today's big unveiling of the new Xbox One earlier today, Microsoft also announced that legendary film director Steven Spielberg will be developing a live action television series based on the popular console video game "Halo." As of now, the acclaimed moviemaker will serve as executive producer of the series along with his production company Amblin Entertainment. This is actually the first official television program in a long line of planned shows, movies, sitcoms, live events, digital shorts, and other outlets that Microsoft plans to explore with the launch of Xbox One.

Though today's unveiling of the Xbox One was known in advance, the announcement of the partnership with Spielberg came as a complete surprise to most.

The studio head a "Halo" developer 343 Industries, Bonnie Ross, announced her excitement about working with the acclaimed director and looks forward to merging "the storytelling magic of television with the interactive innovation of Xbox One."

After Ross' announcement, Steven Spielberg appeared on the giant display screen to talk about his involvement with this new "Halo" venture.

"For me, the Halo universe is an amazing opportunity to be at that intersection where technology and myth-making meet to create something really groundbreaking," Spielberg said from the screen.

The idea around Xbox One is to create an all-in-one entertainment system out of the gaming console. They plan on using a game development model to create these other forms of entertainment including movies and television shows.

While promoting the last "Halo" release, "Halo 4," director Stewart Handler creating a web-series entitled "Forward Unto Dawn." It looks like Microsoft and Xbox have pretty much just expanded on this idea but managed to get the most famous director and producer involved!

Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, concluded this "Halo" announcement by saying, "We've welcomed Steven Spielberg to the 'Halo' universe."
