Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special 2013 [PHOTO]: David Tennant and Matt Smith on Set with Ten's TARDIS, Eleven Stays in Cast for Season 8 Episodes
News concerning the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special has been few and far between lately but some set photos and Series 8 updates have been pouring in recently. From one recent set photo some plot details might have been figured out. Also, with season 8 confirmed to film later this year and air in 2014 (including a 2013 Christmas special), we can announce that the current Doctor, Matt Smith, will be staying on for at least another year.
That's right: when BBC announced the confirmation of an eighth season of the popular time-traveling show, showrunner Steven Moffat and leading actor Matt Smith were also confirmed to return. There is always a possibility that Moffat could write off the Eleventh regeneration of The Doctor, allowing another actor to step into the leading role, but as of now it looks like Smith will be with us until the end of Series 8.
Smith is the youngest actor to get this iconic role and is currently 30 years old. That said, he is still very young. Plus he was recently seen shooting scenes for the Ryan Gosling-directed film How to Catch a Monster in Detroit last week, so perhaps Smith is ready to have his career expand past the BBC.
We might not want to worry so much about the future of Smith's role in Doctor Who considering most of the current excitement is focused on November's 50th Anniversary Special! Casting news peaked last month when Billi Piper and David Tennant were confirmed to return for the special, but now that filming has been going strong there are a few more updates to report.
As many fans know, Piper's character Rose has been sealed in an alternate dimension with a clone of the tenth regeneration of The Doctor (Tennant). When they were cast in the special, most assumed that we would be seeing only the clone of The Doctor. But with new set photos revealing the TARDIS from the Tennant years, it looks like we get to see Ten and Eleven interact in this special!
