Game of Thrones Season 3 Finale, 'Mhysa' Recap (SPOILERS): 'The Northerners Will Never Forget'
After last week's now infamous Red Wedding scene in the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones' third season, last night's season finale ended a great season in a perfect way. Basically, in the aftermath of "The Rains of Castamere," where else could the finale "Mhyra" go besides a lead-in to season 4? We get to see what happens to Robb Stark's body, how Arya deals with the death of her family members, and how Jon Snow makes it back to the Night's Watch. What did you think of the finale of season 3? (SPOILERS to follow)
In the opening minutes of "Mhysa" we are reminded of the death of King Robb Stark as his body is paraded around the campgrounds with the head of his direwolf Grey Wind in place of his own. His army is still being slaughtered and the Stark banners are falling. Arya and The Hound exit the harrowing scene only to come across some soldiers around a fire later on, bragging about what happened to the Starks. The brave Stark girl dismounts the horse she rides with The Hound and kills the man who is bragging the most. As the others join in, The Hound finishes them off. This is the only fighting in the whole episode, but it was rewarding and enjoyable to say the least.
We also learn that Roose Bolton is now in control of the North and his bastard son Ramsay Snow is the one torturing Theon.
Ygritte, who was abandoned in the previous episode, confronts Jon Snow, while he is nursing his wounds from the hawk attack. After he tells her he loves her, she still shoots three arrows into him as he rides away - tears in her eyes. Later on, he is back at Castle Black and reunited with some of his comrades.
Bran and company take refuge in a dreadful house full of bad stories. Therefore, when a mysterious figure appears, the group is defensive. But it is only Same and Gilly, who end up arming Bran, Hodor and the Reeds with the blades capable of killing White Walkers since they need to travel north of the wall. Sam and Gilly make it back to Castle Black and inform the Maester of the White Walkers. They send word around the kingdoms.
Stannis Baratheon is still plotting his attack on the capital and with his brother's bastard, Gendry, he plans to use sorcery to do so. Unfortunately his advisor Davos Seaworth is the only levelheaded man around and helps the captive blacksmith escape. Putting himself in a strange position, he saves hi life by revealing a letter from the Night's Watch that calls for help against the White Walkers.
Back at King's Landing, Joffrey is still terrible but gets stared down by his uncle Tywin during a small council meeting that is centered on the death of Robb Stark. Tyrion and Sansa seem to be getting along well enough until she learns of her brother and mother's deaths. Also, Cersei is finally reunited with her brother Jaime, though she sees he is missing his hand. Clearly, the King's Landing scenes next season will focus on these relationships.
And finally, we end with Daenerys and her army welcoming the Yunkish slaves into their community as they themselves accept her as their leader - literally calling her "mother" in their language: "Mhyra."
Though the episode might have been dull with little action, it definitely gets you excited for season 4. What should we expect in the next season of Game of Thrones?
