Jack Johnson New Album 2013: ‘Better Together’ Singer Talks Sixth Album ‘From Here to Now to You,’ Reveals Personal Song Connections
Folk rock singer-songwriter Jack Johnson gave an interview to Rolling Stone that was published online Monday and in it he discusses the work behind his sixth studio album, From Here to Now to You.
The album drops Sept. 17 and will be an uplifting collection of tracks that offers listeners a personal glimpse into Johnson's life as a husband and father to three young children. But the singer admitted to Rolling Stone that he has had some sleepless nights at his Oahu, Hawaii home in advance of the album's release.
"The stuff that'll give you paranoia right about now is, 'Is it too personal?'" Johnson said. "That's been a balance I've had to find through the whole process of sharing these songs."
"Personal" is definitely the appropriate word to describe the singles from the album thus far. "I Got You" is an upbeat song in which Johnson expresses love for his wife, Kim. "Radiate" brings some more energy and describes the playful creativity of Johnson's six-year-old son.
"He's just constantly drawing pictures with his hands, creating this world and walking into it," Johnson said. "I ask him, 'What are you doing in there?'"
But the album is not all family-focused, as Johnson also dives into his past and looks to the future in the other tracks. "Tape Deck" revolves around Johnson's time with his punk band in high school, while "Ones and Zeroes" warns today's young people against the dangers of technology addiction.
Johnson's last album was To The Sea in 2010.
