While attending the 2013 "Crystal + Lucy Awards" last week, legendary filmmaker George Lucas spoke about the upcoming Star Wars projects and revealed he would not have much input in regards to the J.J. Abrams-directed Episode VII. Lucas, the creator of the popular science fiction series, said that he is "excited" for Abrams' take on the franchise and is confident in him and producer Kathleen Kennedy in terms of vision and execution. Though he said he will not be directly involved in the production of Episode VII, he admitted that he would not turn down the opportunity if he were to be asked for advice.

When asked by Access Hollywood if he was excited about Abrams directing Episode VII, Lucas said, "Yeah. J.J.'s a great director and we're friends. I think he understands the whole thing and how it works."

"If he doesn't, Kathy will keep it straight," Lucas said of Lucasfilm president and Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy.

After saying that he would not be involved that much with the new films, George said, , "If they need help or anything, they'll give me a call. Otherwise, I'm off on my own."

The 69-year-old filmmaker had a bit of advice for his colleagues as well:

"No matter how you do it, it's a complicated cultural icon. Therefore you're always going to be in trouble no matter what you do. So, the best thing you can do is just plow forward and try to do the best story you can."

Star Wars: Episode VII is currently in pre-production and possibly set to start filming in early 2014 in the United Kingdom. Michael Arndt is writing the script and rumors surrounding the plot, cast and story line have been circulating but without any official confirmation. Original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have been rumored to reprise their roles but this too has yet to be confirmed.
