'The Amazing Spider-Man 2,' Sarah Gadon Replaces Shailene Woodley? [PHOTO]: 'Cosmopolis' Actress Cast as New Mary Jane Watson According to Twitter

News of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 cutting all of the scenes featuring Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson led to rumors of the actress being cut out of the franchise completely. Two more sequels to Marc Webb's Andrew Garfield-starring superhero franchise were confirmed earlier this week, so Woodley's cut is very harrowing for the actress. Plus it looks like a replacement has already been found for the role of Mary Jane! Canadian actress Sarah Gadon (Cosmopolis, A Dangerous Method) has just been cast. No role has been confirmed, but many sources believe she is Woodley's replacement.

"Of course I'm bummed," Woodley said of her scenes getting cut. "But I'm a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason... based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."

Of course many believed that she would simply show up in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 as the redheaded love interest, but reports slowly started saying that she was cut altogether. Around the same time that rumors claimed Woodley would be replaced, ET Canada posted this tweet to its Twitter account:

This might just be coincidental timing, but it certainly makes one think. In fact, according to "a source very close to the production," Gadon will be playing Mary Jane Watson in the franchise.

If this is true, this is incredibly sad news for Woodley and kind of a jerk move on the part of the franchise's production team. Woodley had filmed some scenes for next year's superhero film but them being cut apparently made sense to the storyline. In fact Webb commended Woodley's abilities when he spoke about cutting her scenes.

"I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship," Webb said. "Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her."

To be clear, Shailene has not officially left the franchise, but the casting of Sarah Gadon points to that being a possibility.
