Jonas Brothers New Album 2013 [UPDATE]: 'First Time' Band Reveals New Songs, Mature Sound of Upcoming Record [VIDEO]
The Jonas Brothers gave an interview with Music Choice yesterday afternoon (June 20). In between fan questions about their favorite food and Spanish-speaking capabilities, the "Neon" singers revealed quite a bit about their upcoming 2013 record.
The JoBros have taken a more mature approach coming into their fifth studio album. It's been four years since Lines, Vines and Trying Times and Kevin, Joe and Nick are now 25, 23 and 20 years old, respectively. With their own label and Nick producing the record, the trio were able to express themselves more openly and become a full adult act.
They even admitted that there's a "new Jonas" and that the hiatus the group took was a welcome break. ""I think that the break was definitely necessary, taking the time to grow and learn about ourselves and the world we live in and being able to talk about that in our music... having the freedom to talk about it was necessary," Nick said. "Now we have a record that we're really proud of with some real depth with what we're talking about and just the sound overall."
Though the Jonas Brothers have been writing music over the last three years, the songs that actually made the cut for the untitled album are the ones they wrote most recently. Taking a different approach, the band admitted they wrote their music as they were in the recording studio.
This meant that fan favorites "Kerosene" and "Buena Vida" haven't made it onto the new album. Nick also said another track, "Meet You In Paris," didn't make the cut. However, the band emphasized that those songs may not be shelved forever and were "an important part of the journey to the new album."
The Jonas Brothers didn't just tease about tracks that didn't make it onto the record. In addition to the already previewed "Pom Poms," "First Time" and "Neon," the JoBros revealed two new songs: "Sandbox" and "The World."
The former is "about a lot of things, mostly about the concept 'I need to search for my heart, I lost it in the sandbox,'" said Nick, hinting at some potential chorus lyrics. That track will explore lost innocence in matters of the heart, hence the sandbox metaphor.
"The World" seemed to be a favorite of all three Jonases. Joe admitted the song was "a little political" and about the state of American manufacturing to a certain extent. Tackling world issues certainly shows growth in the band's lyrical power.
